The History & Heritage of Belize

Xunantunich

Xunantunich's name means "Maiden of the Rock" in the Maya language, this  Ancient Maya archaeological site in western Belize, about 70 miles (110 km) west of Belize City, in the Cayo District. Xunantunich is located atop a ridge above the Mopan River, well within sight of the Guatemala border – which is 0.6 miles (1 km) to the west.

El Castillo

It is the second tallest structure in Belize (after the temple at Caracol), at some 130 feet (40 m) tall. El Castillo is the “axis mundi” of the site, or the intersection of the two cardinal lines. The carvings depict the birth of a god associated with the royal family, gods of creation, as well as the tree of life (which extends from the underworld, the earth, and the heavens).

Nim Li Punit

Nim Li Punit is a Maya Classic Period site in the Toledo District of the nation of Belize, located 50 kilometres north of the town of Punta Gorda, and directly adjacent to the village of Indian Creek.

Nim Li Punit is a Late Classic (600-900 A.D.) site, with its apogee between c.700-800 A.D. Nim Li Punit is a modern name meaning “Big Hat” in Kekchi Maya after an image of a ruler depicted on a stela recovered from the site. The site consists of three main plazas spread across artificially leveled hilltops. The stone used here is similar to that found at Lubaantun consisting of black slate and sandstone blocks as opposed to the use of limestone as is found in most other Mayan sites.

The Great Blue Hole

About 43 miles off the coast of Belize City, Belize sits an extraordinary natural marvel known as the Great Blue Hole. A massive sunken underwater cave, the Blue Hole’s crystal clear waters, diverse marine life, and stunning geological formations have made it one of the world’s top scuba diving destinations.

Viewed from above, the sinkhole looks like a circle of the deepest blue surrounded by rings of turquoise, aquamarine, and cerulean. In fact, this color contrast is so dramatic that the Great Blue Hole can be seen from space.

Secret Beach is on the west side of the island – the opposite side of Ambergris Caye.

Until very recently, almost ALL development on Ambergris Caye was on the reef side.  The coral reef – the fishing, the diving and snorkeling and the trade winds –  the things that first brought residents to the island and the very first tourists 50 years ago – are primarily on the eastern side of the island.

But less than 10 years ago, a developer filled a LONG road across one of the large shallow mangrove lagoons that forms the center of the caye.  About 2 or 3 miles long, the road stretched from one side of the island to the other!
